Introduction to Joyent

Joyent is a Cloud Computing vendor of ‘Infrastructure as a Service’ (IaaS). Joyent’s main product is a line of virtualized servers called Joyent Accelerators. Joyent’s clients use collections of Accelerators to power-large scale web sites and web applications.

We make it possible for our clients to quickly move from an idea to a web application with millions of users – without the pain of large capital outlays and long-term vendor contracts.

Joyent provides a more flexible and cost-effective alternative to buying and running your own IT infrastructure, while still providing all the security, cost stability, and enterprise-grade performance of a dedicated private data center.

Who uses Joyent?

Joyent’s clients include ABC/Disney, LinkedIn, SympathyTree, Major League Baseball’s MLB.com, the hit shopping site Gilt.com, and over 25% of the daily active application usage on Facebook.   We are one of only two hosting partners recommended by Facebook to their developer community.   The largest application running on Joyent is LinkedIn’s Bumpersticker Facebook app, which does over 1 Billion page views a month. Joyent is also the official hosting provider for Ruby On Rails and the official host for Hi5 application developers.

Joyent’s History

Founded in 2004, Joyent initially developed an innovative platform that enables teams to effectively communicate and collaborate with email, calendaring, contacts, file sharing, and other shared applications. In November 2005, Joyent acquired TextDrive, an advanced application hosting solutions provider and combined – the company provides unique, on-demand service and hardware solutions for users moving from the old, brittle network of siloed PCs to new, agile networks of server clusters, appliances, and mobile devices, all running Web-delivered applications. The Joyent suite of applications is built on open-source components and Ruby on Rails.
